Jefferson Park stop Blue Line, O'Hare branch
Jefferson Park: the Gateway to Chicago
Blue Line, Metra and buses in one building, bungalow streets, Gladstone Park, prices, parks and schools

Jefferson Park has been called the Gateway to Chicago for a reason: the Blue Line, Metra's Union Pacific Northwest line, CTA buses and Pace buses all meet in one transit center on Milwaukee Avenue. The Blue Line station opened February 1, 1970 as the end of the line, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and the bus terminal was rebuilt in a $25 million project finished in July 2019.
What it is like
This is a predominantly middle-class neighborhood with a heavy Polish-American presence, home to the Copernicus Center, and known for the number of city and county workers who live here: teachers, police, firefighters, sheriff's staff. The streets are the bungalow belt at its best, brick Chicago bungalows with front lawns and detached garages on the alley. Gladstone Park, the northern section around Northwest Highway, Central, Milwaukee and Foster, has so many Dutch Colonial houses it earned the nickname Little Rotterdam, and it has its own Metra station.
I closed here on June 30: a 1913 three-bedroom on North Lovejoy, 1,563 square feet, listed at $350,000 and sold for $345,000 four weeks later. A house with a yard, one train from the Loop, for less than half of what a typical Wicker Park home is worth.
What it costs
Zillow Home Value Index for July 2026, the typical value of a middle-tier home: Jefferson Park $417,695 (+6.7% in a year), Gladstone Park $414,243 (+5.5% in a year). The Lovejoy sale is a fair picture of the market: bungalow-belt money, appreciating steadily.
Getting around
Blue Line 24 hours a day; Metra Union Pacific Northwest at the same station; Pace Pulse Milwaukee; CTA 56, 68, 81 and more from the terminal. The Kennedy entrance at Foster serves Gladstone Park.
Parks and schools
Jefferson Memorial Park, seven acres at 4822 N. Long, is on the National Register, with an athletic field, an outdoor pool and a Clarence Hatzfeld fieldhouse. Residents are served by Chicago Public Schools with neighborhood and citywide options, plus Catholic and Lutheran parochial schools, and the Chicago Public Library has a Jefferson Park branch. Taft High School, in Norwood Park next door, serves Jefferson Park among its communities.
