Western: Bucktown west and Ukrainian Village west

Western is the elevated stop where Milwaukee crosses Western and Armitage, the last station on the old 1895 steel structure before the line drops into the subway at Logan Square. This is the west end of Bucktown; Ukrainian Village and the Humboldt Park boulevard are a walk south.

What it is like

The blocks off Milwaukee here mix the corridor's two eras: classic brick two-flats and frame cottages next to the brick-and-limestone condo buildings that went up in the 2000s when the train made this the easy commute. It is quieter than Damen, a few dollars cheaper, and the same ride downtown.

I closed here in June: a two-bed, two-bath condo on North Artesian, 1,350 square feet, built 2007, listed at $580,000 in May and closed at $575,000 on June 30. That is what a well-kept condo a short walk from this platform costs right now, from the public record, not from me.

What it costs

Zillow Home Value Index for July 2026, the typical value of a middle-tier home: Bucktown $688,763 (+6.6% in a year), Ukrainian Village $596,729 (+9.3% in a year), and the West Town community area as a whole $632,313 (+5.3% in a year). The Artesian sale sits in the middle of that band.

Getting around

Blue Line, 24 hours a day. The 49 Western and X49 express, the 56 Milwaukee and the 73 Armitage stop at the station. The Kennedy is close on the east side; the 606 trail crosses Western a few blocks north of the platform.

Parks and schools

The Bloomingdale Trail, 2.7 miles long and open since 2015, is the neighborhood park here, with four ground-level access parks along it. Humboldt Park's 197 acres are a mile southwest. Schools follow the West Town and Logan Square attendance maps; both areas are served by Chicago Public Schools, and I will pull the boundary for any address you are looking at.
